OpenAI published ten solved maths problems on Friday and I read every proof, and I am not giving it any applause yet.
Astra solved 10 open problems, so what?
OpenAI says an unreleased model called Astra solved ten old open problems in maths and computer science.
Every solution comes with a Lean proof you can check yourself, and OpenAI puts the compute at about $2,000 for all ten.
The model itself is not released, so you cannot use it or test it.
My take
Hold the applause. We are grading a demo OpenAI built and scored.
The ten wins sit in areas where the work is to search a huge space and check what you find, and problems like that have always favoured machines.
That is not me being difficult, it is what independent reviewers said the day the paper went up.
I will not dismiss the Lean proofs, because a proof a machine can check holds up no matter who made it.
But checking a proof someone gave you and choosing which problem matters are different skills, and I will believe "AI does research" when it does this on problems picked by someone outside the lab.
The work is strong but narrow.
