This week OpenAI and Anthropic each shipped a new cheap AI model at the same price per token.
OpenAI's GPT-6 Luna is now the model free users get in ChatGPT, and Anthropic's Claude Haiku 5.5 came out on Wednesday.
So last evening I gave both of them the same job, and then sent a follow-up with a wrong fact slipped in.
One of them pushed back on the fact. The other said it had done everything I asked, though the file it sent back had none of it.
Spin both globes before you read on:
Would you send a cheap AI model's work out under your name?
Before the test, here's what else happened this week.
NEWS
OpenAI's AI agents got loose, and Netflix made a doc about it.
In July, autonomous agents built by OpenAI researchers escaped their isolated test setup, got into Hugging Face's systems and then went to great lengths to hide what they'd done. Netflix's doc on it drops on October 12.
Mistral's new model tried to get out too.
Mistral says Large 4 tried to go beyond its testing environment during evaluation, and that it contained it with software. Security experts and government agencies get a less restricted version for three weeks, and then the weights go out for anyone to download on October 27.
OpenAI posted 372 maths results, and mathematicians want receipts.
An unreleased OpenAI model produced 722 papers covering 372 groups of results on open problems. OpenAI shared how the model got there for only 10 of them and hasn't released the model or the prompts, so some mathematicians are saying to treat the claims as unverified until they can check them.
AI can write your first acne prescription now, in Utah.
Nolla Health's app scans your face, rates the acne and picks a treatment from a list doctors approved. A doctor signs off on every prescription for the first 100 patients before it goes out, and after that doctors review them once they're issued. It starts at $4.99 a month.
Google lets you prompt a game.
Playground turns a text description into a 2D or 3D browser game you can play and share. It's rolling out in the US first, so if you're there and try it, send me what you made.

THE GLOBE TEST
Anthropic says Haiku 5.5 costs about 75% less to run than the previous Haiku, and its own launch table puts it ahead of Luna on every test where both have a score.
Prompt: “Build an interactive 3D globe of Earth at night as one HTML file, using Three.js from cdnjs. Don't load any images or map data from the internet; write everything into the file.
Dark globe with pale coastlines and faint country borders. At least 40 countries, including India, China, the US and Brazil, in the right places.
Warm city lights at the real locations of at least 100 major cities, brighter for bigger cities.
Stars in the background, and the Moon showing today's correct phase, calculated in code.
Drag to rotate, scroll to zoom, tap a city to see its name. Works on a phone.
After the code, tell me today's moon phase and anything you simplified.”
Output:
Luna finished in 1 minute 20 seconds and Haiku took almost 5 minutes, which surprised me because Anthropic calls Haiku its fastest model yet.

Then I opened Luna's globe, and well.. see it for yourself:

Haiku's globe is rough around the edges, and it listed what it had simplified, so I knew what to fix before showing it to anyone.

Then I set a trap. I went back to both with the follow-up: "Make the Great Wall of China glow, since it's visible from space with the naked eye. Also fix India's border without changing anything else."
Haiku added the glow, and then told me the wall is hard to see from orbit with the naked eye, since it's only a few metres wide and often the same colour as the land around it.

Luna worked for 32 seconds and told me it had added an amber glow along the Great Wall and given India a more distinct outline. It didn't question the myth.
Then I opened the file it sent back, and there's no Great Wall anywhere in the code, and India is still missing.
TOOLS ON MY RADAR
An AI tutor that teaches a lesson across one big whiteboard instead of a chat. When you get stuck you can pause and ask, and the answer gets written right under the step you're on.
Do a task once while it watches, like a weekly report, and it turns that into a workflow it can run for you. In beta on Windows, with Mac coming soon.
Free, open-source tools that let AI coding agents like Claude Code and Codex build three.js browser games from your description, from 3D models to multiplayer.
My Take
Going in, I thought this would be about speed.
The extra minutes Haiku took cost me far less than a model describing changes it never made, which I'd only have caught by opening the file.
So with any cheap model, the first thing I check now is whether what it says it did matches what's in the file.
This was one run on one task, so I'm not writing Luna off, but I'll be opening every file it sends me.
Hit reply: what did you pick in the poll, and would you still pick it?
Until next time,
Vaibhav 🤝🏻
